Chief Master Sergeant Emerson E. Williams was the Food Service Superintendent at Shaw AFB from 1965 until 1969 and again from 1972 until his retirement from active duty in 1974. Mr. Williams became Food Service Officer in 1975 at Shaw and remained at the position until he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Services in 1988. He pioneered the A la Carte feeding system for the Air Force using Shaw AFB as the test base bringing a higher standard to food service and retiring the old mess hall feeding system. He led and inspired food service teams to win "Best in TAC" and "Best in PACAF" honors at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand ; Shaw AFB, South Carolina and Kadena Air Base, Okinawa , Japan . Chief Williams led the Food Service Team at Kadena Air Base winning the John L. Hennessy Award for the "Best in Air Force" Food Service in 1969. As Deputy Chief of Services, Mr. Williams made Shaw AFB the benchmark for TAC in both Lodging and Food Service earning "Best in TAC" honors from 1989 through 1992. Ultimately building high quality of life programs long before quality of life became the buzzword for the Air Force.

Chief Master Sergeant Emerson E. Williams was born in Kershaw County, South Carolina on 16 August 1930. He quit attending Baron-DeKalb High School to help out his family support the family farm. He worked at the Spring Mill Farm Co-op in Kershaw County and received his high school equivalency before enlisting in the Air Force in 1951. His assignments included Langley AFB, Virginia, England AFB, Louisiana; Ubon RTAFB, Thailand; Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan and Shaw AFB, South Carolina. Chief Williams retired from the Air Force in 1974 and started his civil service with the Air Force in 1975. During his civil service career at Shaw AFB, South Carolina he served as Food Service Officer and Deputy Chief of Services until his second retirement in 1992. Altogether, Chief Williams served the Air Force faithfully for 40 years and always strived for excellence with never-ending enthusiasm for the airmen he served.
