Youth Programs
The Youth Center has been renovated inside to include an addition of 4300 square feet, so we are now able to better accommodate approximately 120 children in the School Age Program. We have also opened a Youth Center Annex, which is used for the Teen “Supreme” Center. It is located in the 5000 housing area. The Teen Center includes a recreation area, a computer lab, 2 multi-purpose areas, and an outdoor basketball court. We are also lucky enough to have a Youth Sports Complex. It is located on the far side of the flight line by the FamCamp. It consists of 3 lighted baseball/softball fields, 1 multi-purpose field and 2 lighted soccer fields. The complex also offers a full concession stand, a playground, and a pavilion. We are very excited about our Youth Programs and we are excited about the opportunity to serve more youth in our community. All Youth Programs prohibit the use of alcohol, illegal substances, and tobacco.

Referrals
If youth are identified as needing special services, referrals are made to on- or off-base agencies for professional counseling, medical care, clothing, food, etc. If staff or regular volunteers identify youth that need health, dental, or vision examinations or treatment, the youth director or flight chief consults with the parents and offers assistance in obtaining services.

YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM
Our philosophy and mission is to provide organized leagues as well as informal sports and fitness activities for youth ages 4-17. Our goal is to provide every participant an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of whatever particular sport they choose. We want to place the kids in a fun and learning environment that ranges from noncompetitive to low-key competitive for younger ages 4-10, and a normal competitive environment for ages 11-17.

Through this environment Shaw AFB Youth Programs strives to provide each youth with a means in which to develop desirable physical skills and to mature emotionally and socially. These skills are developed through interaction with other children, volunteer leaders, and our Youth Programs staff.

Shaw AFB Youth Programs has fully implemented the National Standars for Youth Sports and is in strict accordance and compliance with AFI 34-249 and AFMAN 34-804. Combined, these two instruments insure that every youth comes away from our program with a positive and rewarding experience.

The program's intent is not to develop the next professional athlete, but to teach all participants the fundamentals of a variety of games and to place an emphasis on participation and fun rather than a win at all cost mentality.

Baseball, Softball, and Tee Ball are offered in the spring. Registration begins in February, practices begin in March and the season will end in June.

Soccer is held in the fall. Registration begins in July, practices begin in August and the season will end in November.

Basketball and Cheerleading are offered in the winter. Registration begins in October, practices begin in December and the season will end in March.

Flag Football - usually in the winter but depends on number of requests.

Summer Sport Camps are offered weekly throughout the summer. A variety of sports are offered such as soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, volleyball, in-line hockey, archery and others.

Volunteer Coaches are the backbone to the youth sports program. If you love sports and enjoy children this is the job for you! Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to the Shaw community.
